With summer approaching, many bikes are about to spend considerably more time on the road or trail. Before those longer rides begin, it is worth giving your bike a thorough once-over.

You do not necessarily need a workshop full of specialist tools. A careful inspection of the major components can identify many problems before they become expensive repairs—or leave you walking home.

Start with the Tyres

Check both tyres for cuts, cracks, excessive wear or objects embedded in the tread. Pay particular attention to the sidewalls, where damage can be less obvious.

If your wheels are tubeless, inspect the sealant level and check for signs of leaks.

Also check that the wheels are sitting correctly in the frame and fork and that thru-axles or quick releases are properly secured.

Check your Brakes

Brake performance is one area where there should be no compromises.

Inspect the brake pads for wear and check the rotors for excessive wear, contamination or damage. Spin each wheel and listen for unusual rubbing.

For hydraulic brakes, pull each lever firmly and hold it. The lever should feel consistent and should not gradually move towards the handlebar. A spongy or unusually soft lever can indicate a problem that requires further investigation.

Inspect the Drivetrain

Cleanliness makes inspection much easier. Look at the chain, cassette and chainrings for excessive wear, damage or missing teeth.

Check that the chain runs smoothly through all the gears and that shifting is accurate. If the chain skips under load or the gears refuse to shift correctly, it is better to investigate now than halfway through a summer ride.

Give the chain a suitable bicycle-specific lubricant after cleaning it, and wipe away the excess.

Check the Wheels and Bearings

Lift each wheel and spin it. Listen for grinding or unusual noises and check that it rotates smoothly without binding.

Try moving each wheel sideways within the frame or fork. There should be no noticeable play.

Do the same with the headset. With the front brake applied, gently rock the bike backwards and forwards. Movement or a knocking sensation from the headset should be investigated.

Check the Cockpit

Inspect the handlebar, stem and seatpost for cracks, damage or unusual movement. Check that the relevant bolts are correctly tightened to the torque specifications.

If your bike has a dropper seatpost, make sure it operates smoothly and returns fully without excessive play.

Don’t forget the Suspension

If fitted, inspect the fork and shock for damage, contamination or signs of oil leakage. Check that the controls operate correctly and that the suspension is responding as expected.

Have a good look at the seals and check for perishing thereof. Cracked or perished seals will allow internal contamination.

Suspension components often require specific service intervals, so check if servicing is overdue.

One final check

Before your first major summer ride, take the bike for a short test ride. Listen for unfamiliar noises and pay attention to anything that feels different from normal.

A few minutes spent checking your bike at home can prevent a frustrating roadside failure—and may reveal a problem while it is still small, simple and relatively inexpensive to fix.

A summer-ready bike is not necessarily a freshly serviced bike. It is a bike that has been properly inspected, tested and found to be safe and ready for the riding ahead.
